Surviving Winter in Shropshire and Telford

Last year, over two hundred people in Shropshire died from causes directly attributable to cold and poor winter living conditions.

In November the Community Foundation will be launching the Surviving Winter campaign in Shropshire and Telford. We are asking generous patrons to donate to us some or all of their unneeded Winter Fuel Payment, so we can help vulnerable elderly people struggling with cold homes and fuel poverty this winter. The money will be recycled into targeted support for grassroots schemes that support these vulnerable individuals keep comfortable and secure through the winter.

Surviving Winter is a national campaign but it is being independently managed and implemented by local Community Foundations. That means all money raised in Shropshire will stay here – donors can be assured that their contribution will be making a real and meaningful difference for vulnerable communities in the county.

We are hoping for donations from people over the age of 60, who will receive a Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300 in December. Many recipients are still working in successful careers, or have ample savings to support themselves in retirement, and might feel uncomfortable about receiving a government grant they don't particularly need. If just a fraction of those individuals felt they could donate it to the Foundation this would raise a significant amount of money for those who might otherwise have to choose between heating and eating this winter. 

However, you don’t have to be in receipt of a Winter Fuel Payment to make a donation - anyone who wants to support the campaign can make a donation of any size, and it will be very much appreciated!
